As manufacturing industry continues to develop, the use of machine becomes more and more essential. It not only increases productivity, but also allows variations for the same products. However, variety means more tools are involved in the manufacturing process, and in order to maintain efficiency without sacrificing precision and quality, the use of an auto tool changer is inevitable.
What is an auto tool changer?
An auto tool changer (ATC) is an important tool for CNC machines to achieve full automation. As these two terms are closely related, we will briefly look into CNC machines before diving into ATC.
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control and it is a term widely used in the manufacturing industry, because almost every industry uses parts or components made by CNC machines, for examples, plastics, wood, metals and other hard materials. Typically, a CNC machine is a computer-driven machine with tooling that allow it to produce parts with different shape from solid materials. Some basic types of CNC machines are lathes, routers, plasma cutters and 3D printer, they perform material cutting with different mechanisms.
Again, ATCs are designed to help achieve full automation. They do so by carrying a range of tools on themselves. Generally speaking, there are two types of ATCs, one is rotary-style and the other is linear-style. The main difference between these two ATCs is the number of tools they carry.
An auto tool changer usually consists of five different parts, namely base, tool holder, gripper arm, support arm and magazine (used to store the tools).
A typical workflow of an auto tool changer
Below is the description of how ATC functions during CNC machining, which is through 180 degree rotation tool changing mechanism:
1.The computer connected to the CNC machine issues a tool change command.
2.The machine spindle returns to home position, and the tool to be changed is put into the tool change position.
3.Then the gripper arm (with one gripper on each end) rotates 90 degree and picks up the tool from the spindle and the next tool from the magazine simultaneously.
4.After picking up the tools, the gripper arm rotates 180 degree and place the new tool in the machine spindle and the old tool in the magazine.
Tool changing in this automatic fashion usually finishes within seconds without any involvement of human operators.

Again, to facilitate the multiple functions of a robotic arm in a production line, a robot/auto tool changer is indispensable. In this case, the ATC looks a bit different than that used in a CNC machine. The namely robot tool changer is a coupling device which locks and unlocks pneumatically. It has a master plate which connects to a robot, and a tool plate mounting to end effectors like grippers, welders or grinders. After connected, this robot tool changer can pass utilities like electrical signals, pneumatic and water.
When it comes to tool changing, the robotic arm brings the master close to the tool without touching it. The locking mechanism is engaged, which allows the tool to be sucked up from the tool stand and to a locked position with the robotic arm. This no-touch locking technology is very powerful, which can provide a high load carrying capacity for the machine.
This tool changer is usually created stronger than the robotic arm, so it can offer flexibility to manufacturing process with both reliability and utmost safety. A fail-safe locking mechanism is also applied to hold the master plate and tool plate together when air pressure is lost accidentally. This fail-safe design can prevent accidental unlocking caused by gravity, acceleration or vibration. It usually involves the use of hardened stainless steel components (locking ball) to pull the tool plate up to the master plate, while applying extremely strong locking forces to secure the locking of the two plates.
